“Play is often talked
about as if it were a
relief from serious
learning. But for
children play is serious
learning. Play is really
the work of childhood.”
~ Fred Rogers

Our Philosophy of Care
Sweet River Bamboo draws from an eclectic mix of educational models and philosophies. The key component of our program is the creation of a safe, nurturing environment where children can explore, create, socialize, and be inspired by the world around them. Children learn best when they are allowed to reach developmental milestones at their own pace, in an environment where they feel secure, loved and respected. A mixed-age group provides an enriching space for children to grow and thrive. When new children arrive, they are supported in their absorption of their surroundings and their openness to experience. As they grow, children will have a voice in forming their own experiences and that of the group and will have a chance to become leaders and role models for the younger children.
Our Rhythm
Our days will be filled with a balance of group activities and free play with plenty of outdoor time built in. Our rhythm carries us naturally through our days and is structured around open play, circle times, outside time, meals and rest.
Our Curriculum
Inspired greatly by Waldorf education, our curriculum consists of uninterrupted time for creative play, art and music, baking, circle time and oral storytelling. We emphasize being in the present moment as much as possible. We encourage an understanding of emotions and impulses in order to help children develop self-regulation, reflection and empathy.
Children will naturally develop their social skills and motor skills by interacting with peers, toys, learning materials, and both indoor and outdoor environments. Language, math, and science development are integrated into activities such as baking, cooking, digging in our Earth, and exploring the rich complexity of the natural world. Great focus will be placed on assisting children in developing their self-care skills and toilet training abilities as they become able and ready physically and emotionally. Children will also be exposed to different cultures and languages through the songs we sing and celebrations we have. The linguistic and cultural component of our program will be influenced greatly by the children and teachers within each group.
