Abby Ryan (they/ she)
Executive Director
Abby joined the Sweet River Bamboo community in the summer of 2022 as a kinship needs administrator. Throughout the summer and fall they have grown into their current position of executive director through close work and training with SRB’s founder, Sahra, and the administrative team. As executive director, Abby is thrilled to support the current operations and ongoing development of Sweet River Bamboo!
Abby’s passion lies in creating socially and emotionally responsive programming and care environments for children in their first 6 years of life. Coming from an infant care background, Abby has seen first-hand the importance of creating secure attachments and fostering a sense of community in young children’s lives. These are principles that guide Abby every day.
Abby has her Masters in early childhood education with a concentration in organizational change and leadership from Pacific Oaks College. They graduated in 2021 and are very excited to bring their educational background and expertise to SRB. Throughout their Masters program, Abby learned valuable leadership skills, deepened their knowledge of child development, discovered business and HR best practices, and engaged in critical self-reflection about their leadership style. This educational experience, alongside Abby’s many years of teaching experience make them uniquely qualified to lead and guide SRB.
When Abby is not busy with the kinships, they are still enjoying getting to know Portland! Abby moved here from Boston in 2021 and is still setting down roots in this new community! Abby lives here with her partner and rescue dog, Bug, and enjoys spending time exploring all of the beauty of the Pacific Northwest with their family! Abby is naturally drawn to holistic living experiences and some of their most cherished memories are those spent outside in communion with nature. Outside of work, Abby can often be found exploring nature, creating art, and trying out new recipes!
